We love hosting friends at our house, and this time we threw a party with a fun twist — an Izakaya theme night! Since my husband David is Japanese American and lived in Tokyo for 10 years after college, he has a deep love for Japanese cuisine. He has always dreamed of inviting friends over and recreating the authentic Izakaya experience.

저희 부부는 집에서 친구들을 초대해 파티하는 걸 정말 좋아하는데, 이번에는 특별하게 이자카야 테마 파티를 열었어요. 제 남편 데이비드는 일본계 미국인으로, 대학 졸업 후 10년 동안 도쿄에서 살았던 경험이 있어서 일본 음식에 대한 애정이 남다르답니다. 그래서 늘 친구들을 불러 진짜 이자카야 같은 분위기를 만들어 보고 싶어했죠.

So, we transformed our home into “Izakaya Iwanoya” (which means “The Iwano’s” in Japanese). We decorated with paper lanterns, old fans on the walls, and even hung a lantern sign outside the door. A chalkboard menu and bar-style seating gave the vibe of a cozy Tokyo Izakaya. It was so much fun setting everything up — our guests loved the atmosphere!

We all wore matching white button-up shirts — even little Leo! It made us look like Izakaya chefs, and Leo as our tiny chef was just the cutest. 👨‍🍳

이번에 저희는 집을 **“이자카야 이와노야”**로 변신시켰어요. “이와노야”는 일본어로 ‘이와노네 집’이라는 뜻이에요. 종이등을 달고, 벽에는 오래된 부채 장식을 걸고, 현관 앞에는 이자카야 등롱 간판도 걸었어요. 메뉴판은 칠판으로 준비해서 벽에 붙이고, 바 좌석도 만들어서 손님들이 요리를 바로 보며 즐길 수 있도록 했답니다. 덕분에 다들 진짜 도쿄의 이자카야에 온 것 같다고 좋아했어요.

그리고 저희는 흰색 버튼업 셔츠를 맞춰 입었어요. 우리 아들 레오도 같이 입었는데, 마치 이자카야 셰프들처럼 보였죠. 특히 꼬마 셰프 레오의 모습은 정말 귀여웠어요! 👨‍🍳

Appetizers to Start

We kicked things off with small plates, just like a real Izakaya:

• Agedashi Tofu – chilled silk tofu with bonito flakes & ponzu
• Miso Soup with Daikon – warm and comforting
• Choregi Salad – a refreshing lettuce salad topped with dried seaweed
• Yakisoba – stir-fried noodles with veggies and bonito flakes
• Tamagoyaki – sweet and savory Japanese rolled omelet

이자카야답게 작은 접시 요리부터 시작했어요.

• 아게다시 두부 – 차갑고 부드러운 두부에 가쓰오부시와 폰즈 간장
• 무 미소시루 – 따뜻하고 구수한 미소국
• 초레기 샐러드 – 바삭한 김 토핑을 얹은 상큼한 양상추 샐러드
• 야키소바 – 채소와 가쓰오부시를 올린 볶음면
• 다마고야끼 – 달콤하면서도 짭짤한 일본식 계란말이

Sushi & Handrolls

Next came everyone’s favorite — sushi! We bought fresh sashimi, spicy tuna, and salmon from Costco, and our friend Aaron helped roll beautiful maki and handrolls. The presentation looked amazing, and everyone was impressed at how much food we prepared.

그다음은 모두가 좋아하는 스시 타임! Costco에서 사시미와 매운 참치, 연어를 사와서 준비했어요. 친구 아론이 직접 마키롤을 말아줬는데, 비주얼도 예쁘고 맛도 최고였어요. 준비한 음식의 양과 정성에 다들 놀라워했답니다.

The Main Star – A5 Kobe Wagyu Beef 🥩

For the highlight of the night, we grilled buttery, melt-in-your-mouth A5 Kobe Wagyu. Some we served as sushi, and some straight off the hot grill. The flavor was unforgettable — so tender that even the kids loved it!

메인 디시는 바로 A5 고베 와규! 생일 파티에서 먹고 너무 맛있어서 이번에도 준비했어요. 전기 그릴 위에서 구워서 바로 먹기도 하고, 스시로도 만들어서 즐겼어요. 입에서 사르르 녹는 부드럽고 진한 맛에 어른들도, 아이들도 모두 감탄했어요.

Izakaya Classics

To finish the savory part of the meal, David made Chicken Karaage — crispy, juicy Japanese fried chicken served with lemon mayo. Even though everyone was full by then, no one could resist it.

마지막으로 남편 데이비드가 치킨 가라아게를 튀겨냈어요. 겉은 바삭, 속은 촉촉한 치킨에 레몬 마요 소스를 곁들였는데, 이미 다들 배가 부른 상태였지만 손이 멈추지 않았답니다.

Sweet Ending

We wrapped up with Yuzu & Matcha Ice Cream. The citrusy yuzu was refreshing after such a rich meal, and the kids couldn’t get enough — they kept asking for seconds!

디저트로는 유자 & 말차 아이스크림을 준비했어요. 유자는 레몬과 비슷한 아시아 과일인데, 기름진 와규를 먹은 후 상큼하게 입안을 정리해주기에 딱이었어요. 아이들은 너무 맛있다고 계속 리필을 부탁했답니다.

A Night to Remember

It was a lot of work to plan the menu and set up the decorations, but watching our friends enjoy the food and atmosphere made it completely worth it. The bar seating made the night feel intimate, like a real Tokyo Izakaya, and the kids had the best time playing together.

집을 꾸미고 메뉴를 준비하는 게 힘들긴 했지만, 손님들이 즐겁게 음식을 맛보고 분위기를 즐기는 모습을 보니 모든 수고가 값졌어요. 특히 바 좌석에 앉아 요리하는 걸 지켜보며 함께 이야기 나누는 시간이 정말 이자카야 같아 친밀하고 특별했죠. 아이들도 함께 뛰어놀며 즐거워하는 모습을 보니 마음이 따뜻해졌어요.

I was so proud of David for cooking and preparing most of the dishes — he was truly the champ of the night! 💛 Sharing Japanese food and culture with our friends made this evening so special, and Izakaya Iwanoya will definitely be a memory we’ll all cherish.

그리고 무엇보다도, 대부분의 요리를 책임지고 멋지게 해낸 남편 데이비드가 정말 자랑스러웠어요. 💛 친구들과 일본 음식을 나누며 문화까지 공유할 수 있었던 이 날은 저희 모두에게 오래 기억에 남을 소중한 추억이 될 것 같아요. 이자카야 이와노야는 앞으로도 꼭 다시 열어야 할 것 같네요!
